Pick the Right Setup

Muffler Delete vs Resonator Delete

Both change the sound of your vehicle. Here is how they actually compare so you can choose the right setup for your build.

Muffler Delete
Purpose
Remove the muffler entirely and run straight pipe in its place.
Sound change
Dramatic. Significantly louder, raw, raspy, and aggressive in tone.
Pros
Loudest possible street sound, cheap, simple, easy to reverse.
Cons
Often too loud for daily driving, drone on the highway, may exceed VA noise limits.
Best for
Show cars, track days, weekend builds, customers who want maximum volume.
Inspection note
Removing the muffler can push your vehicle past Virginia noise and emissions limits.
Resonator Delete
Purpose
Remove the resonator only, keeping the muffler in place.
Sound change
Moderate. Slightly louder with a richer, more aggressive note.
Pros
Better tone without huge volume jump, less cabin drone risk.
Cons
Some highway drone possible, depends on vehicle and exhaust design.
Best for
Daily drivers who want a stronger exhaust note without going full straight pipe.
Inspection note
Usually inspection-safe when the rest of the system is intact and within noise limits.

Pricing FAQ

Understanding Performance Exhaust Pricing

What starting prices mean, what affects your final quote, and what to expect before you schedule.

Every vehicle and every exhaust setup is different. The starting price covers a clean, straightforward install on a vehicle in good condition with parts that bolt up as designed. Final pricing depends on your specific vehicle, the parts you choose, and what we find once the car is on the lift. You always receive a written estimate before any work begins.

The most common cost factors are vehicle type (trucks, dual-exhaust setups, and lifted vehicles take longer), rust and seized hardware, modifications required to make a kit fit correctly, custom fabrication or welding, supplied parts that need adapters, and the overall condition of the existing exhaust, hangers, and flanges. Premium brands and stainless steel components also raise material costs.

No. Estimates for aftermarket exhaust installations are free. We inspect your vehicle, review your parts or recommend a setup, and provide a written quote. Nothing is installed until you approve the estimate.

Yes. We welcome customer-supplied parts from reputable brands such as Borla, MagnaFlow, Flowmaster, MBRP, Corsa, aFe, and similar. Please have all components on hand before your appointment. Labor is billed at $175 per hour, and we will let you know in advance if your kit requires modifications, adapters, or custom fabrication to fit properly.

Custom fabrication is billed at our $175 per hour labor rate plus materials (tubing, flanges, hangers, clamps). Simple jobs like a single weld repair or a short pipe section are typically quick. Full custom systems, dual conversions, and complex routing take longer and will be quoted in writing after we evaluate the vehicle.

Yes. Financing is available on approved installs so you can get the setup you want without compromising on parts or workmanship. Ask our team about current options when you schedule.

  1. Tell us your vehicle year, make, and model and the sound or performance goal you want.
  2. Choose your parts or let us recommend a setup that fits your budget.
  3. Book an appointment online or call (757) 600-2095.
  4. Drop off your vehicle. We inspect and provide a written estimate before installing anything.

What Virginia Beach drivers say about our exhaust installs

FAQ

Aftermarket Exhaust Installation Questions

Answers about cat-backs, axle-backs, deletes, brand choices, install times, and Virginia inspection rules.

A cat-back exhaust system replaces everything from the catalytic converter to the rear of the vehicle. That typically includes the mid-pipe, resonator, muffler, and exhaust tips. Cat-back systems deliver the biggest change in sound, flow, and rear-end appearance while keeping the catalytic converter and emissions equipment intact, so the vehicle still passes Virginia State Inspection.

An axle-back exhaust replaces only the section from the rear axle to the tailpipe, which usually means the muffler and tips. Axle-back systems are a simpler, faster install and a more affordable way to change the sound and look of the vehicle without modifying the mid-pipe or catalytic converter.

A muffler delete removes the factory muffler entirely and replaces it with a straight piece of pipe. The result is a much louder, raw, and aggressive exhaust note. It is cheap and easy to reverse, but the sound can be too loud for daily driving and may exceed Virginia noise limits depending on the vehicle.

A resonator delete removes the resonator and runs a straight pipe in its place while keeping the muffler. The change is more moderate than a muffler delete. You get a richer, more aggressive tone with most of the original drone control still in place, which works better for drivers who use the vehicle every day.

Bolt-on cat-back and axle-back systems generally produce small horsepower gains on naturally aspirated vehicles, usually in the single digits at the wheels. Turbocharged and supercharged engines tend to see more meaningful gains because reduced backpressure helps the turbo spool. Most enthusiasts upgrade for sound, throttle response, and appearance first, with horsepower as a bonus.

Yes. We welcome customer-supplied parts. If you have already purchased a Borla, Flowmaster, MagnaFlow, Corsa, MBRP, AWE, Banks, Gibson, or any other aftermarket exhaust online, bring it to the shop and we will professionally install it. We confirm fitment and inspect the parts before installation.

Properly installed cat-back and axle-back systems usually pass Virginia State Inspection as long as the catalytic converter is intact, the exhaust has no leaks, and the vehicle is within the legal noise limit. Muffler deletes, resonator deletes, and catalytic converter removal can cause inspection issues. We will let you know up front whether your planned setup is inspection-friendly.

Most axle-back installs take 1 to 2 hours. Cat-back installs typically take 2 to 4 hours depending on the vehicle. Muffler deletes and resonator deletes are usually completed in 1 to 2 hours. Dual conversions and custom fabrication take longer because of the additional welding and routing work involved.

Aftermarket Exhaust Installation in Virginia Beach

Beach Auto & Transmission Repair is Virginia Beach's go-to shop for aftermarket exhaust installation. Whether you drive a Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, Charger, Corvette, 370Z, WRX, F-150, Silverado, RAM, BMW, or Audi, our experienced technicians install the exhaust system you want with clean welds, factory quality routing, and zero rattles. We have built our reputation since 2010 by doing performance work the right way, the first time.

Cat-back exhaust installation in Virginia Beach

A cat-back exhaust is the most popular upgrade for enthusiasts because it replaces everything from the catalytic converter to the rear of the vehicle and delivers the biggest change in sound, throttle response, and rear appearance. We install Borla, Flowmaster, MagnaFlow, Corsa, AWE, MBRP, and more on cars and trucks every week. Drivers from Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk choose us because the install looks like it came from the factory. Truck owners can see the rest of what we do on their platform on our GMC Sierra and Canyon service page.

Axle-back exhaust installation in Virginia Beach

Axle-back exhaust systems are the easier and more affordable way to change the sound and look of your car. They replace only the section from the rear axle to the tailpipe, usually meaning a new muffler and exhaust tips. Most axle-back installs are done in 1 to 2 hours. Borla, MagnaFlow, Corsa, and Flowmaster axle-backs are some of our most-requested installs for Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger owners across Hampton Roads.

Muffler delete Virginia Beach

A muffler delete removes the factory muffler entirely and replaces it with a straight pipe. The result is much louder, raw, and aggressive. It is fast and affordable but the sound can be too aggressive for daily driving and may push your vehicle past Virginia's noise limits. We will tell you up front whether a muffler delete is the right move for your build and your daily routine. Many customers from Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth choose this setup for weekend cars, track builds, and shows.

Resonator delete Virginia Beach

A resonator delete is a more moderate upgrade. We remove the resonator and run straight pipe in its place while keeping the factory or aftermarket muffler. The result is a richer, more aggressive note with most of the original drone control still in place. For drivers who use their car every day but still want a stronger exhaust tone, resonator deletes are one of the best value upgrades we install in Virginia Beach.

Flowmaster, Borla, and MagnaFlow installation in Virginia Beach

We are Virginia Beach's go-to installer for Flowmaster, Borla, and MagnaFlow exhaust systems. Flowmaster delivers that iconic American muscle sound, with multiple series ranging from mild to aggressive. Borla is known for stainless construction, refined cruise, and a serious bark on throttle. MagnaFlow runs a premium straight-through design with deep tone and minimal drone. Tell us how you want the car to sound and we will recommend the right series and part number for your platform.

Performance exhaust shop serving Hampton Roads

We install cat-back, axle-back, performance mufflers, performance resonators, dual conversions, and custom fabrication. We also install customer-supplied exhaust systems purchased online or from a manufacturer. Bring your parts and bring your vision. We make it sound the way you imagined.
